This is a sort of, kind of, how to on converting a car from a mechanical power steering pump to a 12v electric power steering pump. This comes up a lot in EV conversions, but you may also need to do it if you have done an engine swap on a car and can't run an auxiliary or serpentine belt on the new engine. Or if you have deleted the belt for performance gains.
For our Porsche 911 EV conversion project, I thought I would be able to live with unpowered steering for a short while, but after trying to drive the car a very short distance without power steering and finding it really difficult to manoeuvre at slow speeds, this has moved up my priority list.
This is by no means the only way go about this, other options include taking a fully electric steering rack from a more modern car, but this is the tried and trusted method a lot of EV converters go with.
So we're going to look at the components that make up the power steering system and what needs to be done to add an electric power steering pump into a system that originally ran with a mechanical pump.
