(13 Aug 2018) President Donald Trump has signed a $716 billion defense policy bill named for John McCain after delivering remarks in Fort Drum, New York that failed to mention the ailing senator.
The measure Trump signed Monday will boost military pay by 2.6 percent, the largest hike in nine years and replace aging equipment.
The bill weakens a bid to clamp down on Chinese telecom company ZTE.
It allows Trump to waive sanctions against countries that bought Russian weapons and now want to buy U.S. military equipment.
Trump called the bill "the most significant investment in our military and our war fighters in modern history."
The bill authorizes the military parade Trump wants in Washington in November but provides no money for his requested Space Force.
Still, Trump brought up the need for a new Space Force again Monday, saying America's adversaries "have already begun weaponizing space."
He said the U.S. "will be so far ahead of them in a very short period of time, your head will spin. "
The measure also addresses child-on-child sexual assault at U.S. military bases worldwide. The issue was revealed this spring in an Associated Press investigation.
