M1PL - make one purl left - is a left-leaning knitting increase for the wrong side. You knit it into the strand between two stitches. First, you lift the strand back to the left needle coming from the front. And then you purl that extra loop through the backloop. it's as easy as that.
M1PL and M1L form a mirrored pair and will appear similar when seen on the other side. Depending on your individual tension one or the other may appear to be neater.
