Venezuela’s Ambassador Samuel Moncada today (30 Apr) vowed “to stop Mr. Trump’s war against Venezuela,” following “a very dangerous yet very clumsy attempt” by soldiers loyal to opposition leader Juan Guaidó to take over the government.
Moncada said, “we have to prevent these criminal actions from destroying a nation that is not a threat to anyone. We are witnessing a crime in progress, and this morning’s events were part of those crimes.”
The Venezuelan Ambassador said, “the constitutional government of President Nicolás Maduro acted promptly, isolating the focus of the public disorder, with maximum care for human rights – you should see that were no victims to lament for now – and the fundamental freedoms of the Venezuelan people, preventing the innocent majorities from being affected as they have the right to live in democracy and in peace.”
He said it was demonstrated “that this puppet government that pretends to come here to the United Nations and be recognized by member states as a legitimate government, is simply an arm of the United States in Venezuela. It is an embarrassment.”
Moncada stressed that “99.9999 of the armed Forces, except for 20 soldiers who are now hidden or exiled in the Brazilian embassy, are perfectly peaceful and have not fired a single bullet. Not a single one was fired.”
Asked about Secretary-General António Guterres statement following this morning’s events, Moncada said, the Secretary-General should “exercise his duty calling for peace and respect of our constitutional democratically elected government, and not to say that it is impartial or neutral or whatever other ambiguous word.”
In his statement, Guterres “urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint and he appealed all stakeholders to avoid any violence and take immediate steps to restore calm.”
