It takes time, determination, and the right process.
Tips: Learn the top 100 verbs and their conjugation before trying to learn vocabulary. Immerse yourself in the language. Speak to as many native speakers as possible. Its better to learn a lot in a short period of time than to learn a little piece by piece over a long period of time. Use all your senses-speak/listen to the language constantly. Read/write in the language to retain the knowledge. The two most important phrases are "Como se diz ___" (How do you say ___) and "O que significa ___" (What does ___ mean?). Remember to have fun and not take yourself too seriously. Everyone makes mistakes. These same techniques would work for learning Spanish, french, Portuguese, English,etc.
