(27 Aug 2013) The bodies of six aid workers, said by Afghan officials to have been kidnapped, then shot and killed by insurgents, were surrounded by grieving relatives on Tuesday, as they were brought to Herat regional hospital.
The bodies were found earlier in the day in the Gulran district of western Herat province.
Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai of the Herat Health Department said six International Rescue Committee (IRC) workers had been working at Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation projects in Gulran district when they were kidnapped by an "anti-government group".
"Unfortunately they were killed yesterday at the scene of the abduction and their bodies have been moved to the Herat regional hospital," he said.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation said the six were kidnapped on Sunday by the Taliban and killed after negotiations for their release failed.
Five of them worked for an international non-governmental organisation and one worked for the ministry he said, a slight discrepancy from the statement by Shirzai which said all the killed worked for NGO the IRC.
The ministry runs programmes that seek to improve the lives of Afghans from remote regions.
