Dr. Anita Sethi from Synergy Eye Care explains about Ptosis (Droopy Eyelids), it’s causes and treatment available.
Ptosis is the drooping of the upper eyelid i.e. the upper eyelid is in a position lower than the usual. It also makes the affected eye appear smaller. Ptosis can be in one eye unilateral or both bilateral. It is due to the weakness of the muscle which lifts the eyelid up and down.
This could be inborn or congenital, or it could be acquired or due to trauma, some injury, or due to some neuromuscular diseases like Myasthenia Gravis. Ptosis is usually not harmful to the health of the eye, but sometimes if it is severe and covering the pupil or the central portion of the eye, it can lead to a lazy eye or Amblyopia.
In these cases, the correction has to be done at a very early age in the children. The correction of Ptosis is mainly surgical. We strengthen the muscle which could either be by Levator surgery or by using supportive materials which may be natural like Fascia lata, or it may be artificial like a silicone sling.
Here at Synergy, we have experienced Oculoplastic Surgeons to do these surgeries. This is a surgery, though thought to be cosmetic, it is better done by oculoplastic surgeons rather than general plastic surgeons, because we have a better understanding of the ocular tissues.
