Nestos is one of the five largest rivers in Greece, while it is the border between Macedonia and Thrace and the regional units of Kavala and Xanthi, after crossing the latter R.U. of Drama.
Its course covers a distance of 243 kilometres in total, 130 of which are located on Greek territories. It rises in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria, while it flows into the Thracian Sea, after first having crossed the mountains of Western Rhodope and Mt Falakro.
The river’s delta covers an area of 55,000 hectares and is considered a wetland of international importance, and it is part of the National Park that includes lakes Vistonida and Ismarida.
