Considering the fast-paced, and sedentary nature of lifestyle, physiotherapy is more than essential for overall health and well-being. With this video, the esteemed panel from Narayana Health Group has elaborated on the significance of physiotherapy for COVID-19 patients.
As the scourge of Covid 19 continues to surge, Dr. Vikas Mathur and his panel of experts from Narayana Multispeciality Hospital talk and demonstrate the various physiotherapy exercises for patients with mild and moderate symptoms. Dr. Mathur specifically recommends these techniques for those patients who are undergoing their treatment staying at home and are facing mild to moderate lung problems.
He divides the techniques into two parts to cater to two separate groups of people. The first group whose oxygen saturation has not fallen below 94 should be practising diaphragmatic breathing or relaxed breathing. Dr. Diksha demonstrates the positions for this technique while Dr. Vikas Mathur explains the positions, how many times one needs to continue deep breathing in the positions, and their effect on the lungs. This technique is proven effective to maintain oxygen levels by pumping up the alveoli and helping curtail breathing problems.
The second group of patients whose oxygen saturation is dipping occasionally below 94, but don't require hospitalisation need to follow a technique called proning. They need to practise this in four different positions, holding the position for 30 minutes to 2 hours. This technique is beneficial in restoring the oxygen level in the lungs, opening up the alveoli, sending oxygen to the alveoli at the back and down part of the lungs, and maintaining the breathing rate. Dr. Mathur also narrates the various pillow positions while practising this position like keeping it in between the knees, near the neck, for optional hand support, etc. He cautions people who have undergone abdomen, thoracic, and spine surgeries, have a history of embolism and deep vein thrombosis, had a head injury or spine issues, and are pregnant - against the technique of proning. Dr. Mathur wraps up the session with the benefits and advantages of consistently practising these two techniques for lung functioning and ventilation maintenance.
Dr. Vikas Mathur is a Senior Physiotherapist at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur. Dr. Diksha and Dr. Hemant are also physiotherapists at Narayana Health Institute, Jaipur.
