LEADIN:
Budapest is gearing up for Christmas with a Christmas market welcoming visitors for the first time since 2019 and trams decorated with thousands of Christmas lights.
The pandemic means that access to the market is restricted to vaccinated visitors.
STORYLINE:
This Christmas market in Budapest is welcoming visitors for the first time since the pandemic started.
Last year, health restrictions meant that the event was called off.
But this year's holiday market is once again one of the city's most popular festive destinations.
"Finally, tourists are back and Hungarians are also here. Fortunately, the fair is in its old mood again. We are very happy to be back in business after a year's absence and our spirit is good as usual," says Krisztina Racz, a Christmas market vendor.
Located right in front of the iconic St. Stephen's Basilica, the market is promoted under the slogan "In Love and safety," because access is restricted to vaccinated people.
While wearing a face mask outdoors is not mandatory in Hungary, visitors to the enclosed areas are asked to do so.
According to the organisers, safety measures in place go beyond government requirements, since vendors selling food and drinks need to wear masks and be vaccinated.
