(8 Jan 2019) As the Democratic Republic of Congo anxiously awaits the outcome of the presidential election, the leading opposition candidate said his coalition will publish its own data compiled from polling stations during the 30 December presidential vote "if the proclaimed results are not lawful".
Martin Fayulu in an interview with The Associated Press late Tuesday warned Congo's electoral commission to release the true results as quickly as possible.
Fayulu's comments came after the Congolese government recently announced that the release of the presidential election results would be postponed until further notice.
The electoral commission, or CENI, on Tuesday tweeted that a series of plenary evaluation meetings had commenced during the evening, after which the provisional results would be announced.
Frustration reportedly grew after the decision to postpone, with many expressing concern that the delay was being used to manouvre the results of the vote in favour of the ruling party's preferred candidate, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary.
Prior to the deferral of last Sunday's vote results, President Joseph Kabila, who is stepping down after 18 years in power, had delayed the general election for two years.
