Christmas Day in South Korea
South Korea is the only East Asian nation to recognise Christmas (Sung Tan Jul) as a national holiday.
Unlike Seollal or Chuseok, Christmas is not a big traditional holiday, so most Koreans don't travel back to their hometown to celebrate. As Christmas is a national holiday Koreans enjoy a day off to relax with loved ones. The holiday is frequently billed as "Valentine’s Day with Santa" with residents enjoying their time with their partner, rather than the wider family.
Unusually for a holiday in Korea, there are no particular tasty treats directly associated with Christmas, though it is a good time to indulge in some traditional Korean winter food to stave off the cold Siberian winds that make Korea the coldest country at its latitude.
Since most Koreans live in apartments, few people can or do decorate the outside of their homes, or have a Christmas tree inside. However, churches, shopping malls, and streets are lit up during the festive season.
In 2021, it was announced that Christmas Day will not be replaced by alternative holidays if it falls on a weekend.
