After 8 years, Syria's Aleppo city has once again fallen under the control of rebel groups. This marks a major blow to the ruling Bashar al-Assad regime. Russia's aerial campaign and Iranian military officer Qasem Soleimani had helped the Syrian regime recapture Aleppo in 2016. Now, Soleimani is gone, Russia is preoccupied with the Ukraine war, and Iran is engaged in Gaza and Lebanon. As a result, the Assad regime is not receiving the much-needed support from Iran and Russia. Adding to the challenges, Israel is conducting strikes on Syria. Taking advantage of this situation, rebel groups are gaining ground. Iran uses its Shia militias in Iraq, along with support from the Syrian regime, to transport weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon. This makes Syria highly significant for Iran. A weakened Syrian regime would also weaken Iran's proxies. Meanwhile, extremist groups like the Islamic State could seize the opportunity to regroup and expand in Syria. Currently, the Middle East is already facing significant turmoil, and the growing instability in Syria is likely to escalate tensions further.
