Here is how to install the very latest versions of ALVR on Ubuntu and its derivatives. For other Linux based desktops the method is very similar.
Afterwords search online for Linux and GPU specific settings for best performance on your hardware. At minimum I know it can run SkyrimVR on a GTX 970 with no problems.

1. Install SteamVR, run for first time, then exit SteamVR.
2. Download ALVR streamer, run alvr_dashboard, click "Launch SteamVR".
3. Start ALVR client on the Quest (may be in unknown sources menu).
4. Your in SteamVR on Linux with your Quest. Have fun!
I highly recommend SkyrimVR with mods(manual installation only, see Reddit for mod recommendations).
