Birqash Camel Market
Birqash (pronounced Bir'ash), a small village 35 kilometers northwest of Cairo, hosts one of the world's largest camel markets as well as Egypt's largest. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness merchants buying and selling camels in auctions within the market, as well as traders negotiating and making deals.
Many of these camels are imported from Sudan, other parts of Egypt, and even Somalia. These camels are used for meat, farm work, and tourist rides.
This market has become highly controversial because many people believe it is cruel; however, it is no different than any other meat market. Each country or nation has its own culture and way of life. It is beneficial to observe, enjoy, experience, and respect the various cultures that exist all over the world.
