Here's some drone footage from a my little trip to Pismo Beach and Cayucos. The Pismo Pier recently reponed after an extensive rebuilding. The very end of the pier is closed because of a Christmas display.
The second half of the video is in Cayucos. Cayucos Pier is also long overdue for an overhaul. It was mostly open until a few days ago when another of the diagonal braces fell off and made it's way to the beach. That's when the pier was closed completely. The second half of this video is part nosey-inspection footage and part pretty-California-beach footage.
The end of the video is the what and where of my terminal drone crash. First is a couple short clips of me bringing the drone in on the previous flight. I was somehow still recording when I took over manual flight control for the previous landing. There was limited parking and I was parked under a really big tree. Just after that landing, I set out for a hyperlapse to see if I could get some footage of the clouds moving in. It takes a still photo every 2 seconds for about 25 minutes. When it's done, it makes a video out of it. While it's clicking away, it makes a loud camera shutter sound every time it takes a photo. There was a lot of foot traffic going by and I turned down the phone volume a little bit. I did not hold the controller the whole time. I was just leaning against the fence, admiring the view. I heard the controller beeping and got to the controls just it time to see the beeping was the collision avoidance and it was inches above the top of that tree. I did not notice that it had finished the flight and was automatically returning home. It has collision avoidance and should have avoided the tree. but it didn't. I looked up in time to hear the dreaded weed wacker sound and see the drone cartwheeling towards the sidewalk at a very fast clip :O It looked like a toddler had a temper tantrum and threw the TV remote on the tile floor. There was little pieces everywhere :( It broke the gimbal, two of the arms, and ruined the ND filter that I didn't find until later. Luckily I bought the DGI Care plan and I should have a replacement in a few days :)
