This week's “Meteorite Crew” hangout is great for newbies and rock-hounds. We discuss how to distinguish a meteorite from a meteorwrong.
What are the features of a terrestrial rock vs a real meteorite and what do they tell us? (Fusion crust, desert varnish, trapped sand, regmaglypts, visible chondrules, weathering) We discuss ‘slag’ and how to ID it. Mike Kelly helps us by showing some of his meteorwrongs and a scratch test.
First, we start off with a visit with Fred McPherson in Canada. He shows us some great Canadian pride with his impactites from Sudbury Crater. He has multiple types of impact breccia and shattercones.
On to the real stuff!!! Take a rare tour of some on my personal collection including Erg Chech 002, hammer stones, birthday falls, and a 1.5kg slice of Saint-Aubin (French Iron). We also see Bruce’s beautiful 42g Howardite slice (NWA 12227), and Ron’s Gebel Kamil with wings! Is your Iron meteorite rusting? We discussed both the chemical bath and reverse electrolysis. Are meteorites radioactive?
Congrats to my friend Kyle Josefy for being the newest IMCA member!!!
