Brazil: Rio streets seethe with anger at Catholic Church
An alliance of activist groups demonstrated against Pope Francis, the Catholic Church and the Brazilian government in Rio de Janeiro on Monday. Demonstrations were held in front of Guanabara Palace, where the Pope was meeting with President Dilma Rousseff. They were prevented from getting too close by a cordon of police officers.
Among the protesters were groups who oppose what they view as the Catholic Church's discriminatory views against people who identify as LGBT. They were joined by indigenous peoples and political activists who protested against what they see as the misuse of public funds.
Pope Francis is in Rio for his first trip outside Italy as head of the Catholic Church. He opened World Youth Day on Monday -- an event expected to draw millions of people to Rio de Janeiro and nearby sites over the course of a week. Over 120 million Brazilians profess to be Catholics, making it the largest Catholic country in the world. More than 20,000 soldiers, police and other officials have been deployed to provide security for the Pope's visit.
