Drew Barrymore thought that E.T was real! At the time of playing Gertie, Drew Barrymore was only 7 years old and didn't understand that E.T was in fact a puppet, not a real extra-terrestrial, so much so that she was seen talking to the puppet at times. Once Steven Spielberg caught wind of this he went to great lengths to keep the illusion alive for Drew, assigning two guys to keep E.T alive so that when she would talk to him he would move and react to her.
