Israel has become the first country in the world to announce a second national lockdown amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision in a late night TV news conference on Sunday, saying: "I know these steps are a heavy price for us all."

"These are not the holidays we are used to. We certainly won't be able to celebrate with our extended families."

Beginning on Friday, the eve of the Jewish New Year, schools, restaurants, shopping centers and hotels, among other businesses, will be forced to close.
