(18 Jul 2021) Parents of Argentine children with disabilities and underlying medical conditions are demanding that the government vaccinate their children with the Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus.
Dozens of parents of the minors protested outside the main gates of the government house in Buenos Aires on Saturday to call for the vaccine to be brought into the country for their children.
Since the pandemic began, many of these children have not left their homes or received adequate therapy for fear of being infected with the virus.
A petition on Change.org has already registered almost 200,000 signatures.
Parents of affected children have formed the VacunaMe network, comprising some 400 families who want authorities to provide their children with the Pfizer vaccine, the only one recommended for children and adolescents.
Argentina is one of the few countries in the region where children under 18 are unable to receive it.
The country received on Saturday a batch of 3.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, donated by the US government.
Chief of staff Santiago Cafiero said that the Argentine government is awaiting authorization from the FDA (Foods and Drugs Administration), the regulatory body for medicines in the USA, to vaccinate minors between 12 and 17 years of age.
