More than 270,000 people were present at World Youth Day's Way of the Cross, according to the event's organizers. 500 million people, however, followed it on live TV.
After the Pope's prayer in St. Mary's Cathedral, the 13 stations of the Way of the Cross began, depicting the Last Supper in a way that evoked the time of Jesus. An aborigine played the part of Simon the Cyrene and took the cross on his shoulders.
At the ninth station, when Jesus is stripped of his garments, a young man and woman sang "Amazing Grace," an American song that was commonly used during the slave era.
At sunset, the crucifixion was re-enacted. While the apostles carried away Jesus' body in the final station, the event ended with an Irish religious song sung under the cross.
