How a Formula One driver nearly bankrupted his team.
After a 2-year break, the former McLaren and Ferrari driver returns to Formula One. He negotiated with Williams, Red Bull, but suddenly for everyone he ended up at Lotus, where he was offered excellent conditions of 15,000,000 € per year and fantastic bonuses of 50,000 € for each point scored in the individual competition. We are talking about Kimi Raikkonen. Lotus miscalculated, Kimi soared to third place in the overall standings in ’12, collected 183 points in ’13 and should have received €19.5 million in bonuses alone.
Lotus did not expect such success, and they ran out of money before the middle of the season. The staff, including Kimi, stopped receiving salaries, and the team faced the threat of bankruptcy. Raikkonen could easily bankrupt the team if he sued to pay off debts. But then ordinary employees were under threat of dismissal, and he gave up. Lotus never paid him the missing €6,000,000. Do you think this is the right thing to do?
