Thousands of low-income workers and their supporters took to the streets of the U.S. city of Chicago on Wednesday as part of a nationwide rally, fighting for a 15-U.S. dollar minimum wage.
School employees, students and workers from Walmart and fast food restaurants gathered at the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago for an afternoon rally as part of the "Fight for 15" campaign. They particularly demanded that measures be taken for equal pay between different races.
"The cost of living in the United States is very high, alright. Our rents have increased; our mortages have increased; our energy costs have increased. But our wages have not increased," said Elce Redmond, a protester.
In large cities like Chicago, African and Hispanic Americans are earning less than white workers even they do the same jobs.
"It is getting worse, not better. African Amercians have almost no wealth. Their level of home ownership is at a historical low. Their unemployment rates are almost 25 percent, real unemployment rates. They are struggling and they are falling behind economically," said Joe Losbaker, another protester.
The protesters later marched and gathered at a McDonald's restaurant in Chicago's central business district - the Loop.
According to reports, protests were held in more than 200 cities. More on: [ Ссылка ]
