Should you choose a county or private agency? In foster care and adoption this can be difficult. Here's some Foster Adoption Information for those exploring the pro's and con's of agencies VS counties.
Foster care and adoption are difficult. There are a lot of decisions that must be made quickly. One of these decisions is whether to be attached to a county or a private agency. This adoption/foster care decision dramatically impacts what your journey with foster care looks like. In this video there are some tips and some information on each option.
Here's the cliff notes :)
Private Agencies:
Are an additional set of people in your home and in your life
May charge more money/fees
Offer more support
Are on on the foster parent's side (And the kid's side!)
May License you faster
Are not the first choice for placing agencies
Have more adoption/fostercare rules
Kids Stay Longer
Have Higher Staff Turnover
County:
Fewer Social Workers in your life/home
More Calls, but tend to be shorter in length
Fewer Fees
Offer less support
Won't help you adopt outside the county if you want to explore this option
Fewer rules but rule interpretation may change more
Foster parents are often seen as the enemy
Less staff turnover, but more staff burnout
This is a tough decision, but knowing how you want to live out your call to service will help inform how you want to move forward.
