This is me being a massive fan boy and wanting more people in the world to join me in the huge respect I have for Paul Mullen.
Paul Mullen has had a varied but always interesting career ever since appearing a frontman of the always amazing Yourcodenameis:Milo. They were possibly one of the most criminally under supported British bands of recent times. They always struck me as the British equivalents to The Mars Volta, but showing what happened if you grew up listening to your parents XTC records rather than Santana.
YCNI:M were a simply amazing live band to witness. I remember seeing them open for an up and coming Kasabian in a dingy little venue and they floored me. It was obviously the universe's little joke that Kasabian went on to play arenas whereas Milo went on hiatus after a couple of full length albums and an album of collaborations (Print is Dead) with a whos who of the british alternative scene.
Paul went on to join The Automatic (most famous for the hit Monster). After coming in to replace their outgoing keyboardist / bizarre yelping guy, it didn't take long before he was co-writing and co-lead vocalist.
The Automatic called a halt after the rather too common label battle and then Paul went on to form Young Legionnaire with Gordon Moakes from Bloc Party. Interestingly both The Automatic and Gordon Moakes were both artists who worked with YCNI:M on the Print is Dead album.
His next venture was to add some guitar steel and his vocal talents to the Losers project started by DJ Eddy Temple-Morris and former The Cooper Temple Clause guitarist Tom Bellamy. They had a few successes in music being licensed for TV shows such as Game of Thrones.
There were another couple of shorter lived stints in the bands Bleach Blood and Horsefight and then he seemed to go quieter for a while, having relocated to Berlin and then it seems LA.
It's fair to say that although YCNI:M never hit the heights they deserved, the fans who did love them had never given up the hope of seeing Mullen back in his true home. Thankfully the signs looked better after they reformed to do a couple of gigs at their old haunt, The Cluny in Newcastle (one of which was live streamed for those who couldn't get tickets). They also were added to the line-up of ArcTanGent 2023. We can only hope that this will lead to some new songs or at least a full UK tour to give us all another chance to savour one more thrilling live experience.
