Between January and April 2024, India incurred a loss of around ₹120 crore due to cybercrime, with over 7.4 lakh people filing complaints. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concerns over rising cybercrimes and digital fraud during his 'Mann Ki Baat' address on October 27, urging people to stay vigilant. He also shared an audio clip of a real-life 'digital arrest scam' to raise awareness.
According to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, losses due to cybercrime reached ₹1,420 crore in the early months of the year, with scams related to business, investment, and romance being the primary causes. The report indicates that 46% of these cybercrime cases are linked to the countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, from where Indian citizens are being targeted. PM Modi has urged people to report such incidents immediately.
