Hello welcome to MooMooMath In this video I would like to work on converting units of measure. For instance, say we have, we will start with an easy problem.
Convert 15 centimeters and we want to know what this is in inches. The way I convert a conversion problem like this is to start with what is given and place this over 1. Then write a multiplication sign and draw anther fraction, I always put the unit that I'm converting to on top. I want inches so I will place inches on top, and then place the unit rid of on the bottom. I then ask " Which unit is larger?" I know that 1 inch = 2.54 cm I next multiply and these units will cancel out. 15 x 1 = 15 , 1 x 2.54 = 2.54. Then divide those two numbers and you get 5.905 inches.
Let's recap, place the unit that is given over 1, place my goal on top of the other fraction. Finally, multiply straight across. Lets say we have 7 millimeters and I want to know how many inches this is. I set it with mm over 1, and write my multiplication sign, now when I get here, I don't know how many millimeters are in an inch so I will convert to centimeters, and then to inches, because I know that i inch is 2.54 centimeters. I place my goal unit of measure on top. I then place what is given on the bottom. I ask " which unit is larger?" Which is larger mm or cm and I know centimeters is larger so 10 millimeters = 1 cm. I then can go to inches. I put my goal unit on top, put centimeters on the bottom, ask " which is larger?" i inch equals 2,54 cm. Lets see what cancels. Millimeters and centimeters cancel and we are left with inches. I then multiply across. 7 x 1 x 1 = 7. 10 x 2.54 = 25.4 I divide next and I get .2755 inches. This was a little more involved. You can see the units cancelled and we just multiply straight across and then remember to put a 1 by the larger unit. Lets go in the opposite direction. This time we will go 12 kilometers equals to how many inches? I repeat the same thing. Put kilometers over 1. I don't know how many kilometers are in an inch, so I will first convert to meters. Ask myself " which is larger?" I then place a 1 by meters because meters are larger. I next convert to centimeters and I know 1 meter is equal to 100 centimeters. Finally, I will convert from centimeters to inches. I will place inches on the top, and centimeters on the bottom of the fraction. Put what you want to convert to on top. Lets see what cancels. KM and meters cancel. I know 1 inch = 2.54 cm. I complete my Math. 12 x 1000 x 100 = 1,200,00. Then 1 x1 x1 = 2.54. I next divide 1,200,000 by 2.54 = 472,441. So there is your answer converting kilometers to inches. Don't forget your unit of measure in inches.
