Ikan Empurau or its chinese name “忘不了鱼” is best known as the most expensive fish to eat in Malaysia. What makes this fish so precious is due to its rarity to catch in the wild. They lived in freshwater river and their diet mainly consists of fruits known as Buah Kabang that dropped from the overhead trees. Also, it has a slow growth rate where it takes roughly two years to reach the size of 1 – 2 kg and another year to reach 3 – 5 kg. Recent logging activities also threatens population number as the water quality worsen.
Due to all these reasons, catching an empurau in the wild is a difficult task and in recent years, a few empurau farms have been set up in the Borneo region. According to news report, an empurau that is 2 kg or below costs about RM400 per kg. For empurau that is 4 kg and above, it would probably costs about RM1000 per kg. Besides that, there are two types of empurau: red and white. It is said that red empurau could be sold at a higher price than the white empurau.
It was fortunate for us that an white empurau was given to us by Sheepie’s relatives who managed to purchase it from a local Iban fisherman at RM100 per kg. According to the local, as soon as the fish leaves the water, the fish must be gutted to preserve the freshness.
