When you need extra traction, especially in the winter, you’ve got options. Quick-fit snow chains are a tried and true choice to keep in your vehicle. And now, there’s another type of traction device available called a tire sock. They’re like a pair of socks for your vehicle with grippy fabric that pull over your tires.
Both quick-fit tire chains and tire socks offer traction on ice and snow. And with a little practice, both are relatively easy to install. But, as long as chains are listed as an option in your owner’s manual, quick-fit snow chains are likely the best choice for you. They can last for years and take you over the mountain and back again safely. However, they’re a bit more complicated to install than tire socks.
Tire socks, on the other hand, are designed for any vehicle with limited wheel well clearance and provide a smoother ride than chains. They are easy to install, but do wear out over time and need to be replaced once 50% of the road-contact fabric is gone.
