Wedging fire doors open is illegal and will allow fire to spread freely through a building. However, fire doors are heavy and self-closing, making them awkward in a lot of situations such as offices, care homes, and hospitals. The Dorgard retainer from Fireco has an acoustic sensor that listens for the sound of the fire alarm which will cause it to release, allowing the door to close in an emergency.
