Error Code P0171, running lean, typically means you have too much air for the amount of fuel the computer is adding. In this case - AFTER the mass air flow sensor - there was a HOLE in the air tube going from the air filter to the intake manifold. Replacing the part - fixed the problem - and no more error code... Oh - and yes - I did replace the valve cover gasket after I fixed the error code issue... Had the car new since 2003...
