The incident of Ababeel throwing stones is a historical and religious event mentioned in the Quran. This incident took place in the year of the Elephant (i.e. 570 CE).
Abraha was the king of Yemen, who was of the Christian religion and had built a great church in Yemen, which was called Qulays. Abraha wanted the Arabs to choose this great church for worship instead of the Kaaba, but the Arabs used to go towards the Kaaba. Angered by this, Abraha decided to destroy the Kaaba to prevent people from going there.
When Abraha's army approached Mecca, at that time, birds called Ababeel were sent by Allah. These Ababeel were birds that came in small groups. Allah Almighty sent these birds specifically to destroy Abraha's army.
Each of the birds of Ababeel had three small pebbles in its mouth, and it was throwing these pebbles at Abraha's army. Each pebble would hit a soldier and tear his body apart in such a way that the soldier's condition would deteriorate and he would die. This event was like a natural disaster, which devastated Abraha's army.
