Practice starts for the Formula One Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro. Drivers object to FILA license fee decision.
Practice for Sunday's (12/4) Formula One Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro got underway a full two weeks before the actual race, but they were later overshadowed by a threat of strike action from the drivers themselves. Top Formula One drivers such as reigning world champion Alain Prost of France and Brazil's Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet threatened to strike if the International Autosports Federation (FISA) did not revoke a decision to add one hundred pounds Sterling for each point scored during the present season to the superlicence fee.
Nelson Piquet was quoted as saying "We do not agree to pay any extras. If FISA fail to agree, we are going on vacation", that is, the drivers will refuse to take part in the Brazilian Grand Prix, the opening event of the season. Piquet added that he had talked with Alain Prost and others, who had authorised him to speak for them. Piquet said their dispute was not about the amount of money, but a matter of principle. Piquet added: "If we accept to pay what they are asking now, who can guarantee they will not charge ten times more next year?"
