I've tested the Sony HX9v head to head against the HX30v, to see what the difference in quality is on video footage.
The two cameras are very close in specifications and they are both great cameras, but it's clear that the HX30v is a useful update to the earlier model.
The image on the HX30v is clearer and the exposure system seems to cope better with backlighting, at least on this quick test. The sound quality also seems higher to my ears.
When I show the box, take a close look at the text at 1:41 and you'll see how much sharper the newer model, the HX30v, appears to be.
Remember that both cameras were set on totally automatic and I have done no exposure, or colour correction on this video. With a little tweaking I could have got better results than shown here, but this is what you get 'out of the box' from both cameras.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment. If you have any suggestions or requests for just let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'll make a video showing the still image quality comparison shortly.
The video was shot and produced using the following:
Sony DSC-HX9v and DSC-HX30v, both shooting at 1080 50p
downsized in Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 to 720p
HP P6320 UK desktop computer
Intel i5 processor @ 3.20 ghz
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
Windows experience index rating 5.1
Voiceover in the very final segment was created with Adobe Audition using the Microsoft LX-3000 Lifechat headset. A review of that headset will be uploaded shortly.
