Months of sustained downpours have battered China with floods unseen in decades, displacing millions and testing the limits of the world’s largest hydroelectric dam. But such rainfall is far from over, as grimmer challenges are ahead. As flooding on the Yangtze River peaked again this week in the sprawling metropolis of Chongqing, the Three Gorges Dam saw its water rise to the highest peak in its history. The dam is now the most dangerous environmental crisis in China. Concerns over the structural integrity of the Three Gorges Dam are mounting as a video went viral simulating the destruction that could happen, if the dam were to collapse. Is it a fatal flaw of the design? And what did the masterminds behind this project attempt to achieve? We’ll take a close look at the history of this controversial megaproject - the Three Gorges Dam.
