Today we’re taking a look at both of my 1981 Maico 490's. One has been restored to more of an original factory condition and the other restored with a lot of aftermarket parts to make it a better race ready bike for vintage racing. Both of these bikes were restored before I purchased them from their previous owners.
Maico spec'd a new chassis for the 1981490 that raised the footpegs over the 440, lowered the steering stem, extended the wheel base by two inches and lowered the seat height. The chassis changes is what made this bike out handle the competition. These Maicos weigh about 248 pounds and have 53 horsepower. Being that they’re the last years of the twin shocks, I’ve heard the 1981 model year is one of the best years to own. I’ve also heard so many good things about racing Maico 490s just because they handle so well and the power delivery is perfect. After my shoulder surgery is healed, I will be taking the 490 out to a few ADVRA races to see if it truly is the greatest dirt bike of all time.
