In the aftermath of the Target breach, your information may be for sale on the black market. Cybersecurity expert and computer forensic analyst Mark Lanterman describes the Dark Web, “it’s very user friendly”. Disguised as a hacker, Lanterman browsed the sites to uncover the potential threat to Minnesotans. “The fact is, this website allows a bad guy consumer to get whatever he or she wants down to the smallest detail”. A hacker can request a certain type of card from a certain bank belonging to someone in a specific town. “I think we’re talking hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars”, says Lanterman. Hackers offer a new batch of cards approximately every other week, meaning that even if you check and you’re not currently a victim, you may be soon. “Even if you come up fine now, you may not be fine five months from now”, Lanterman explains. Though not everyone can check the dark web and see if their security has been compromised, Lanterman advises, “You should be proactive and you should cancel these cards”.
