In the lush landscape of central Vietnam, not far from the mythic Perfume River and the ancient capital of Hue, lies a hill that bears a seemingly insignificant name - Con Thien. The Vietnamese called it “small mountain of heavenly beings” which Americans translated as - “Hill of Angels.” Although no one knows for sure how the hill got such a heavenly name, just a glance at its verdant surroundings explains it all. Yet, beyond its scenic beauty lies a darker history. Nestled deep in the jungles of the Hill of Angels lay concrete remnants of times when even Angels turned their backs on this beautiful place. These monuments, once bunkers, reveal a story of struggle, pain, and misery during one of the most horrifying battles of the Vietnam War for U.S. Marines. The psychological toll on the Marines would earn Con Thien the nickname "Our Turn in the Barrel" and "the Meat Grinder", while the DMZ, was said to stand for "Dead Marine Zone."
