STORYLINE:
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Christina Rocca met the Pakistani foreign minister on Tuesday for talks on a range of issues, including terrorism.
Later in the day Rocca is scheduled to meet President General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and other foreign ministry officials to discuss the situation in Iraq, Afghanistan and the war on terrorism.
Rocca's visit is being described as part of periodic consultations between Pakistan and the United States.
Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, and its security agencies have arrested more than 600 al-Qaida suspects, including some senior figures, since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in America.
However, scores of al-Qaida-linked militants are still believed to be hiding in Pakistan's tribal regions near Afghanistan, where Pakistan has deployed about 70-thousand troops.
