Loktak Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake in Manipur. It is located near Moirang and deemed to be the largest freshwater lake in North East India. Characterized by the floating vegetation called ‘phumdi’, Lokatk Lake is also known to be the only ‘Floating Lake’ in the world.
Loktak Lake is a natural treasure for Manipur which not only adds to the exotic natural beauty of the state but also plays a very significant role in the economy of the state. Loktak is the main source that drives the power, irrigation, and drinking water supply of the state. The lake is rich and abundant in bio-diversity. The most beautiful aspect of the Loktak Lake is the ‘phumdi’ which is a heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages of decomposition. There are several ‘phumdis’ floating all over the entire stretch of the lake giving it an amazing perspective. These floating ‘phumdis’ are sturdy enough to build thatched huts upon them and make great settlements for the local fishermen.
