I was listening to an episode of the Mind Pump Podcast today, which is phenomenal btw and I’ll leave a link for you to subscribe in the description of this video. They were speaking about myths around the gym, so I thought I’d make a list of what I think are the top 5 worst gym myths.
Myth #1: Weight rooms aren’t inclusive places. Many people think that weight rooms are intimidating and exclusive. My experience has been the opposite. Weight rooms are some of the most diverse and helpful places I’ve ever been in. Remember that everyone training either has or used to have a body they weren’t satisfied with.
Myth #2: The biggest and or fittest people are the most judgemental. I once built up the courage to ask the biggest guy in my gym how to do a straight-arm pushdown correctly, and I still use his advice to this day. The most in shape people usually have a massive passion for fitness, and as long as you don’t interrupt them, they will be thrilled to help you.
Myth #3: More training is always better. Sometimes less is more in the gym, and if you don’t give your body adequate time to recover, it is difficult to keep making progress. 4 sessions a week is usually a good sweet spot.
Myth #4: Cardio is the best way to lose body fat. A lot of people think all there is to do in the gym is run on a treadmill, and that’s how they’ll get the body of their dreams. The truth is that eating in a caloric deficit is the most efficient way to burn body fat.
Myth #5: Running is the best form of cardio. Running is a difficult skill that can negatively impact your joints if you aren’t well trained. I’d suggest treadmill walking or low-impact cardio like the spinning bike.

P.S. I believed a lot of these myths before I set foot in a gym, which is the main reason why it took me so long to actually start training, so I understand where they come from.
