This is the view from the top of Sleeping Giant in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, just an hour from Thunder Bay!
You can access this view by hiking the Top of the Giant Trail. Below are 5 must-know tips for this hike ⬇️
1. The Top of the Giant trail is accessed via two other trails. You start with the Kabeyun trail, connecting to the Talus Lake trail, which connects you to the Top of the Giant trail.
2. This is an in-and-out hike that round trip is approx 22 kilometers. While most of the trail is flat, 7 kilometers of it involves tough elevation gain & hiking downhill. But the hardest part of this hike is the length, you'll be hiking for 6-8 hours.
3. The ridge portion of this trail (which is up on top of Sleeping Giant) goes a long massive cliff with drops of over 900 ft. The views of the cliffs and Lake Superior are INCREDIBLE, but be extremely cautious of the edges, keep your distance.
4. Be prepared! Leave early enough that you have a minimum of 10 hours daylight ahead of you. Bring lots of water (there's nowhere to refill even with a filtration system), food, layers, wear proper hiking boots and bring poles if you have unsteady knees. Know that you will not have mobile service for most of the hike.
5. If you have a mountain bike, bring it! You can cycle the first 7kms, which saves time (and energy).
Hiking to the Top of the Giant is tough, but absolutely worth it. Of all the hiking we've done in Ontario, we agree that this was the most rewarding view 🙌
