It’s hard to say within Phoenix Miller’s back catalogue the exact point beyond which it becomes unacceptable to listen, but 1976's 'What Was She Wearing?' is probably close to that line. Miller died in 1989, a legend of the Motown scene. His memory has been tarnished somewhat by the post-humous accusations of assault by 1,859 women in the wake of the MeToo movement.
In 2019 his manager of 20 years, the Reverend Dr Don Ray, said: "Everyone knew that Phoenix was a ladies' man, but nothing in his work ever hinted at his darker side."
LYRICS:
[Verse 1]
Oh sugar pie
I think we both know
yes I think we know what they'll say
When they find out
you got with me the other day
[Chorus]
They're gonna ask each other
"What was she wearing?"
"What was she wearing?"
Yes, what are you wearing
to get a guy like me to go crazy over you?
[Verse 2]
And girl when they see the sketch you did
The sketch you did of me
For the local news
How will any lady resist?
Yes how will they resist asking?
[Chorus]
"What was she wearing?"
"What was she wearing?"
Yes, what were you wearing
to get a guy like me to go crazy over you?
[Verse 4]
Oh sugar pie
If the police come to take me away
I think we'll both know
Yes I think we'll both know
what some of the detectives will say
They're gonna be askin' me
[Chorus]
"What was she wearing?"
"What was she wearing?"
Yes, what were you wearing
to get a guy like me to go to jail over you?
[Instrumental]
[Verse 5]
Baby after my first night in prison
When my cell mates
are done pounding my behind
they're done pounding my behind
I know I'm gonna be asking
Yes you know what I'm gonna be asking
[Chorus]
What was I wearing?
Oh what was I wearing
Yes, what was I wearing?
For me to become
a jailhouse sugar pie?
Yes what was I wearing?
What was I wearing?
