Afro Rock singer PJ Powers enjoyed a highly successful musical career in South Africa spanning more than 15 years. She was banned for a year (in 1988) from radio and TV by the apartheid government - for performing at a charity concert in Zimbabwe with Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte. She was encouraged to continue her singing by Nelson Mandela, who sent her an encouraging letter from prison.
