Subscribe to my you tube channel for 227+ more coal mine tributes and counting. Way back in 1867 John and George Crompton sunk the first mine shaft in Butcherwood at Teversal; the colliery that grew from this became Teversal Colliery (but was sometimes referred to as Butcherwood colliery after the area in which it was located). John & George Crompton's business later became the Stanton Ironworks Company. Teversal pit became well known for having one of the shallowest shafts in Nottinghamshire but I am as yet unsure of the actual depth. Teversal (called Tevershall) is the site of Wragby Hall where Clifford and Connie Chatterly lived in the D.H Lawrence novel, Lady Chatterly's Lover. This book gives good detail of the life of Tevershall colliery and colliers, although it is not clear if the coal mine, and the nearby Stacks Gate Colliery, described in the novel, actually existed. Teversal was the home of the fictional Lady Chatterley in the novel. Sadly recording 93 fatalities During its 111 Years History. 1869 to closing sadly in 1980.
