The Pileated woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America that is not extinct, or nearly extinct. The largest woodpecker in North America is the ivory billed woodpecker and is believed to be extinct. The Pileated woodpecker is nearly the size of the American Crow and has a long slender neck with a red triangular crest on top of the head. They can have a wingspan of 26" to 29.5"! These are beautiful birds and often visit our yard.
