It's so refreshing to watch a well-executed action film that grosses you out as much as it surprises you and Alien: Romulus hits the sweet spot.
Directed by Fede Alvarez, his take on the brilliant world of Ridley Scott's Alien is a triumph. Not only does he favor performances through cinematographer Galo Olivares's sweeping shots of an abandoned spaceship harboring terrifying creatures, but, along with editor Jake Roberts, manages to increase tension alongside truly gruesome spectacles.
Does that sound wrong? Because it felt so right. This is a film that should be seen in a cinema with an audience, particularly for the action sequences that take a cue from George Miller and expand the scope of the frame. Cailee Spaeny is an absolute star, and Isabel Merced is very effective as a colonist just trying to get through the day.
In my latest episode, I discuss how Alien: Romulus brilliantly pays homage to previous films in the franchise, how the performances rival those of other reboots and legacy sequels, and why this film is an unintentional advertisement for Invisalign.
