Rare Bonsai Tree | Calliandra Bonsai | Bonsai introduction and care
This flower looks a little bit familiar. Some people may think it is Albizia, also known as Mimosa. This plant is actually called Calliandra tweedii or Brazillian Flame Bush. It is native to Brazil and Uruguay. Calliandra and Alzibia belong to the same Fabaceae family. But they are two different genera.
Let's take a look at the leaves of this plant. Its leaves are similar to those of Alzibia, but not that big. It's also similar to the leaf of shy grass. The leaves of the shy grass, however, will contract when you touch it, and this leaf has no reaction. Its delicate, fern-like leaves are open during the day and gathered together at night. The flower looks like a big red ball, very fluffy and beautiful. It's about the same as the flowers of the Alzibia, but crimson instead of pink. Shy grass also has a similar pink flower, but their flowers are much smaller. Calliandra species can also produce pink and white flowers. These flowers usually open at night. This flower is different from the other three. That's because this flower has already bloomed. When the flower is done blooming, these needle-like petals will be collected, turned into a few bunches, and finally hung down, slowly withering. The flower has a relatively short flowering period, which is about two days. There is no comparison with orchids. Some orchids can bloom for two or three months. I have one orchid that has been blooming for almost a year, and I have heard that that kind of orchid can keep blooming for about four years. Well, please look forward to my next video to introduce that orchid. Now, let's talk about how to take care of this plant.
Calliandra species come from tropical climates. They like warm and humid environments. The temperature of the surrounding environment should be kept above 23 degrees, and avoid going below 15 degrees in winter. The temperature in my sunroom is around 23 degrees, and we have a humidifier to keep the air moist which is perfect for Calliandra - you can also place the bonsai on a tray of pebbles and keep some water in the tray. This tree needs full sun or part sun. We can put it outside when the weather is warm, but when the temperature is low in autumn and winter we need to move it inside the house. It will bloom most of the year, including all summer long, when the brilliantly colored flowers can attract hummingbirds. We put it near a south-facing window to ensure adequate sunlight. The soil used to grow this plant can be a mixture of garden soil and river sand. This kind of soil ensures good drainage and has a slightly high pH. Water the plant when the top of the soil is dry, but not before the whole pot dries out. This bonsai needs regular pruning. Usually we can prune it at the end of winter, right before it starts to bloom in spring.
