Odisha became the first state to formally announce an extension of the current lockdown until April 30. The 21-day lockdown imposed by the Central government was set to expire on April 15, but with a day-to-day rise in COVID-19 cases in India many experts and government officials have warned that continuing to implement official social distancing rules was the most effective way of controlling a drastic rise in coronavirus cases. PM Narendra Modi too had a day earlier hinted at a possible extension of the lockdown saying he had been advised against lifting it completely. Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in India are at 5,865 with 5,218 active cases and 169 deaths.
